    Welcome to Heather Likes Food!

Hey, thanks for signing up! Be sure to check your email!

Hey, I'm Heather-- the voice, cook, photographer and part-time crazy-eyed woman behind Heather Likes Food! I'm so glad you're here and before you start exploring the site, I have a question for you:

Do you want to feel like a total rock star in your kitchen?

Yeah? I kinda think we all do! It's so fun to make a meal for others and hear the "ooohs" and "ahhhs" and "mmmms" as they eat! My goal is to bedazzle that apron of yours and get you to start singing from the rooftops that you know how to cook!

    Incredible Recipes

The recipes you see on Heather Likes Food is the food I make for my family. We try to keep our diet moderately well balanced so you'll find a mix of good old-fashioned comfort food, healthy salads and soups, desserts, vegetarian options and everything in between.

My focus here is on SIMPLE and DELICIOUS. Sure, it's fun to make a recipe with 32 steps and cart-full of ingredients sometimes, but it's not my every day and I'm sure it's not yours either! I am a mom of 3 real (usually picky) kids, a real husband and a very real schedule and budget.

I’m a firm believer that you don’t need to spend hours in the kitchen, have a degree in cooking or spend lots of money on fancy ingredients to make excellent food. Usually, with a little know-how, the simplest ingredients taste the greatest.

How Do I know These Recipes Are Any Good?

Every recipe is tested by my family and friends and has gotten a big thumbs up. Also, as you scroll the site you'll see that my recipe cards have ratings and those ratings come from readers, like you! You'll be able to see other reader's comments, including ingredient substitutions, praise, or what they would change. As you try these recipes, you'll be able to rate them as well.

    Simple Ingredients

I'm not going to send you to the store to buy a pack of guava gizzards that you'll use for one recipe and never look at again (guava gizzards may or may not be a thing). I will give you recipes that use ingredients that you likely already have in your pantry or would normally buy. Grocery budgets are real and hard to stick to sometimes! I try to craft my recipes so they are makeable on just about any budget.

About Me, the "Heather" that likes Food.

I graduated from Culinary School at Utah Valley University about 12 years ago and have always loved the art of cooking (and eating!) food. Soon after graduation, I started a Catering and Cake Decorating business and spent a few long years
in catering kitchens and behind bakery benches with buttercream on my face and sore feet. By the time my second daughter joined our family, I decided it was time to stay home with the kiddos. What was once a simple blog for cake pictures and recipe sharing with friends and family has turned into a thriving business and I couldn't be happier! Thanks for being here!

How To: Homemade Ice Cream Cake Crunchies

By Heather LAST UPDATED July 23, 2019 · FIRST PUBLISHED March 11, 2013, 2 Comments

    Homemade Ice Cream Cake Crunchies

You know you love it– that layer of crisp, creamy, cookie crunch that you find nestled between layers of  ice cream cake at places like Dairy Queen.  And if you’re like me, you strategically map your bites so that you get the perfect crunch-to-ice-cream ratio with every forkful. But no matter how hard you try, there’s never enough.

    NEVER ENOUGH!

Well today's the day that there will be enough. Enough for every bite of ice cream. Enough to spoon over the tops of your sundaes. Enough to eat with a spoon if you so desire. It's a revolution, I tell you!

These crunchies are super simple to make and have the potential to be very detrimental to my well-being. Things this good should not be so easy to make. But alas, I love you guys so I had to take one for the team and make up a batch just to show you how easy they are.

You'll start with some Oreos and a bottle of Magic Shell. In a standard size package of Oreos you'll need 2 rows.

Plop those cookies into a food processor or get out some aggression with the rolling pin. However you swing it you want to end up with a bowlful of finely crushed cookies. If you're in need of a  flippin' sweet food processor, don't forget to enter my Magimix giveaway!

Pour an entire 7.5 oz bottle of Magic Shell over the Oreo crumbs...

And mix until it's well combined. At this point you can spread it between layers of ice cream and brownies, swirl it into a milkshake, or use it as ice cream topping.

    Homemade Ice Cream Cake Crunchies

These mint crunch parfaits were a huge hit at my house! I just layered mint brownie ice cream with the crunchies and topped it off with a little whipped cream and some Andes mints. So, so good!

    About Heather Cheney

Hello and welcome! I'm Heather, a former chef, and caterer that now shares my love for cooking and teaching here on the internet!

Girl in kitchen tossing a salad

    A Little Background

I grew up in southern Oregon, with a big love for food and trashing my mom's kitchen any chance I got. Every holiday, special event, or even regular Sunday dinners were spent with lots of family, good eats and laughter-- something I strive to keep alive with my own family.

I left southern Oregon to attend school in Utah with the intent to pursue a medical career, but quickly learned that I DID NOT want to be in school for as long as was needed and I needed to come up with a plan B!

During this time it just so happened that I had been watching a lot of Food Network in my college dorm and yearned to cook something other than the Pasta Roni I had been sustaining myself with.

Once I discovered there was a great culinary arts school in the neighboring town to where I was living, I called off pre-med and said hello to cooking school!

    Education

I graduated in 2004 with an AAS in Culinary Arts from Utah Valley University. I was 5 months pregnant with my first child at graduation and if I have any bit of advice to give it's not to get pregnant while attending cooking school!

I'll just say that morning sickness and working in a professional kitchen do not go very well together. I did, however, love going attending school and would go back and do it again in a heartbeat!

    Professional Career

Immediately after graduation, I worked as a Baker and Cake Decorator for a local bakery making dessert cakes, wedding cakes, and pastries, and an Assistant Chef in the kitchen of an upscale rehabilitation facility.

I eventually started my own Catering and Cake Decorating Business. I rented commercial kitchen space from a local inn, catered events, hired my friends to help me, and made more cakes than I can count. It was a good time! I even single-handedly fulfilled an order for 72 dozen cinnamon rolls at one point!

    How I Started Blogging

In the summer of 2010, I was still catering and needed somewhere to publish some recipes that my clients had requested. I had already established a Blogspot (remember that?) as a sort of portfolio site for my cakes and decided to utilize it for recipes as well.

It didn't take long before I was getting visitors to these recipes from all over the country and I realized that I could actually make something of blogging! Thus, Heather Likes Food was born!

Creating and running this website has been a wild ride! I had no idea what I was getting into when I started it, but it's been such a blessing in so many different ways.

Not only have I been able to make an income while being able to stay home with my kids, but I've also been able to travel and support my husband through many years of school, all while doing something I love-- sharing good food with others!

    My Family

I'm a mom to 2 girls (14 and 10 years), a rambunctious 6-year-old boy, and one 2-year-old Goldendoodle dog-child that makes me both love and hate him every day.

My husband is a psychologist at a local University and together we're pretty stinkin' thrilled with the life we're able to share together. We live in the Salt Lake City area of Utah and are slowly renovating the 25-year-old house we bought last year. Very slowly.

    About Me

I'm a cheese popcorn junkie. I don't exercise as much as I should. I have too many purses. I'll never turn down a plate of fried zucchini. I like more nuts in my chocolate chip cookies than chocolate and I once made Kenny Loggins a sandwich.

I also LOVE food. Like, a lot. If you haven't noticed.

    About Heather Likes Food
